Pendragon "Once upon a time ... 1 & 2" english summary

Für eingefleischte Pendragon-Fans haben Pendragon/Toff-Records zwei reizvolle CDs herausgebracht mit einer Raritätensammlung von 1978 bis 1988 herausgebracht, auf denen von alten 4-Track Recordings bis Studioaufnahmen einige bislang schwer zugängliche Tracks enthalten sind.

Volume 1 enthält vorwiegend alte, schabende 4-Track Demo-Recordings .. vom Flair ähnlich der ersten CD des "Genesis Archive Box-Sets 1967-75". Für Fans heilige Juwelen und absolut kultig ... für Neoprogger jedoch einfach nur ätzend, weil total psychedelic, wenn man mal vom furiosen Live-Instrumental Stan and Ollie und den Leichtkost-Pop-Rockern Loving the stranger und Eye for an eye absieht. Zur totalen Verwunderung trägt das schon fast Reggae-artige (!!!) Is this life bei, das die Band selbstironisch auf die CD gepackt hat, da sie wohl ernsthaft glaubte, damit eine Plattenfirma beeindrucken zu können.

Für wahre Fans, Raritäten- und Kuriositäten-Sammler liegen mit "Once upon a time ... 1 & 2" zwei höchst interessante PENDRAGON-Alben bereit, die sympathisch aufzeigen, daß auch solche Bands während ihrer Anfangsphase nur mit Wasser gekocht haben (mann muß das ab und zu verkalkt gewesen sein). Für Fans ein besonderes Schmankerl: die selbstverfasste nette und ausführliche Band-Biographie sowie die - einige Male augenzwinkernd kopfschüttelnden - Anmerkungen zu allen Songs.

Lässt man den historischen und ideellen Aspekt einmal beiseite, sind dies zwei absolut entbehrliche CDs. Wer PENDRAGON noch nicht kennt, sollte mit diesen Scheiben tunlichst nicht den ersten Schritt in Richtung PENDRAGON machen. Obwohl mir persönlich beide Scheiben absolut nicht zusagen, ein dickes Kompliment an PENDRAGON, die mit den beiden Veröffentlichungen Mut zur Selbstironie beweisen. Hut ab zudem dafür, daß man solch angegilbtes Material nicht in eine überteuerte "Zocken wir mal unsere Fans ab"-Box gepackt hat. 2 Punkte

For fans of PENDRAGON here are two rarities collections from their early years (1978 to 1988). Volume 1 primarily features old and noisy 4 track demo recordings from 1978 to 1983 reminding me of the first CD of the "Genesis Archive Box 1967-75". Fans might discover holy jewels ... neoproggers will go mad because of the many psychedelic tracks on here. Three songs are easy listening stuff: the furious live instrumental Stan and Ollie along with the two poprock-tracks Loving the stranger and Eye for an eye. Strange and funny (although not wanted to be funny): the reggae-alike Is this life ("oh my god, did we believe to be able to impress record companies with that stuff ?")

Volume 2 shows PENDRAGON's early years during in the 1980ies. Some of the tracks show the way to PENDRAGON's current qualities (No more tricks and Victims of life). This CD shows not only interesting songs, but also some good songs, like the home-recordings Last bus track and Whalespeak. Oh man ... what a shame is that 70ies dancefloor thing Oriental man ... really made me smile.

PENDRAGON fans will find sympathic treasures and some weird things on these two CDs that come along with a nice and personal band biography and some self-ironical comments on every song.

If you don't know PENDRAGON up to now then keep your fingers off these rarities ... not a good choice to get familiar with that band. In my personal opinion - ignoring the historical rarity aspect - both CDs are a waste of time. But I have to congratulate PENDRAGON for their courage to release those dusty (sometimes embarrasing) tracks, pouring lots of irony upon theirselves and not pulling the money out of their fan's pockets by releasing an expensive box set containing these tracks. It's good to hear that even bands like PENDRAGON used water for cooking and tried some commercial stuff during their demo times of 10 years.
