The Urbane "Neon" english summary

Gleich vorab ein Hinweis: Wo "John Mitchell - guitarist of Arena" draufgeklebt ist, ist noch lange nicht Arena drin !

Das erste Soloalbum des Arena-Gitarristen ist laut Werbekampagne "voller genial schöner Songs, die nicht nur bei Arena Fans ankommen werden". Na also das sehe ich anders. Die Songs sind gut, aber mit Arena hat The Urbane genausoviel zu tun wie Dieter Bohlen mit der Einbauküche von Alfred Biolek.

Auf "Neon" sucht man Progressive-Elemente vergeblich. Das war wohl auch nicht Zweck der Übung, denn es geht im Stile von Bands wie Radiohead oder Weezer (also sehr guter Alternative bis Brit-Rock) zur Sache. Ist zwar nicht unbedingt mein Ding, aber ich ziehe vor dieser Scheibe wirklich den Hut, denn sie stellt den ganzen Chart-Kram dieses Genres spielend in den Schatten.

Besonders gelungen sind z.B. das leicht punk-schrammelige Mary Jane, das einfach nur schöne Aeroplanes, das beschwingte Wide Awake, das fast schon trip-hoppige Staring at the sun, das letztendlich ganz gut abgehende Try sowie der sanfte, honigsüß-harmonische und gefühlvolle Schlußtrack The tide.

Die Scheibe hat mich wirklich überzeugt und alle anfänglichen Zweifel aus dem Weg geräumt. Die-hard Progger sollten sich jedoch nicht auf einen Blindkauf einlassen. 6-7 Punkte mit klarem Hang zur 7.

PS: Nach wie vor für mich unerreicht in diesem Genre: Nuno "Schizophonic".

This is the first solo album of Arena's guitarist John Mitchell, but be warned: it has nothing to do with progressive rock ! What you get is good rock music in the style of bands like Radiohead and Weezer (so it's alternative to brit-rock).

Especially the tracks Mary Jane (a bit punky), the beautiful Aeroplanes, the fast Wide Awake, the trip-hoppin' Staring at the sun, the smasher Try and the emotional last track The tide (great harmonies!) are worth the buy.

Die-hard proggers and die-hard Arena fans should at least listen to this album before buying it. All others who like modern and alternative rock music should check it out ! 6-7 points

Still my all time favourite in this genre: Nuno "Schizophonic"
