Yoke Shire "Masque of shadows" english summary

In Boston mittlerweile zur Rock/Progrock-Kultband erhoben, hierzulande noch total vernachlässigt: das den 70ern nachtrauernde Trio YOKE SHIRE.

Auf dem Bandfoto sehen die einfühlsamen Musiker aus wie JEHTRO TULL auf zu ihren Anfangszeiten. Und exakt in diese Richtung bewegt sich die Musik von YOKE SHIRE. 70ies Rock, gepaart mit celtic folk, einem Minimal-Anteil Blues, dichter Atmosphäre, tiefem charismatisch-mehrstimmigen Gesang, tollen Gitarren/Mandoline-Passagen, erdigen Guitarsound, exzellent groovendem Bass und und und. Mit "klassischem" Prog hat diese Scheibe nichts zu tun, doch YOKE SHIRE beweisen eindrucksvoll, daß Keyboardflächen noch lange keinen Prog machen, denn Keyboards kommen kaum zum Einsatz. Dafür aber dezente und effektive Orgeleinsätze an vereinzelten Stellen. Es ist nahezu unmöglich, Vergleiche mit anderen Bands herzustellen, denn YOKE SHIRE bieten erdigen JEHTHRO TULL Groove (Black Tower), bluesige Einlagen (Shape of a dancer), Folk (Magic circle), schmeichelnd warme 70er-Hippie-Vocals, bis hin zu mystischen Prog-Meisterwerken (The brook, the mirror and the maiden), einen gruseligen Track (Ghost notes), einen straighten Guitar-Duo-70er-Hardrocker (Masque of shadows) sowie einem nostalgischen vervinylkratzten Klavier/Akustikgitarre-Outro (Magic dust). Und das Beste: alles irgendwie doch im modernen Gewand und in einer soundtechnischen Brillianz, die keine Wünsche offen lässt.

Eigenständig, groovy, immer sympathisch unkonventionell, eingängig und doch ein wenig suspekt ... als wäre das Rad der Zeit und 27 Jahre zurückgedreht. Neoprogger und Metalheads: Finger weg. Für Progrocker und Hardrocker gilt: brandheisser Tip; Althippies und 70er Rocker müssen blind zugreifen. Schade, daß es nach 42 Minuten schon vorbei ist ... 42 Minuten, die dicke reichen, um den Hörer in einer 70er-schwangeren Stimmung zu hinterlassen. Wertung: 8

In and around Boston YOKE SHIRE are already a progressive rock/70ies rock phenomenon. The three people seem to bring those glorious hippie days come back to life. Days with rough and groovin' hardrock, floating progrock parts, freakin' organs, a mixture of folk, blues, groovin' hardrock. It's damn heavy to compare this band to another band. "Masque of shadows" is like a meltdown of JETHRO TULL, TED NUGENT, FOLK ... to hell with these comparisons. During the 42 minutes you get great groovin' rockers in the style of the 70ies (Black tower), some blues influences (Shape of a dancer), beautiful celtic folk (Magic circle), charming warm vocal washes, spooky minutes (Ghost notes), one straight guitar-duo rocker (Masque of shadows) and an atmospheric prog masterpiece (The brook, the mirror and the maiden). And best of all: you get great old, complex and dense flair in the finest sound that modern recording techniques have to offer. I love it !
No album for the average progger, neoprogger or metalhead. But a must for all 70ies rockers, open minded progrockers, nostalgic hippies and motorcycle gangs. An unique band with unique sound, unique vocals, unique compositions and an unique atmosphere ! Congratulations to Boston for giving birth to such a great band ! 8 points
