Alex Masi "In the name of Bach" english summary

Der gebürtige Venezianer ALEX MASI hatte bereits mit seinem Guitar-Demo "Fire in the rain" 1987 guten Anklang gefunden. Mit seinem zweiten Album "Downtown dreamers" und dem Video zu "God promised a paradise" gabs vor allem dank MTV den Durchbruch - zumindest in den USA. Sein erstes richtiges Solo-Album "Neon shark" wurde 1989 sogar für einen Grammy in der Kategorie "best rock instrumental album" nominiert. Nachdem Alex nun sein eigenes Studio fertiggestellt hat, machte er sich direkt an die langersehnte Arbeit, der klassischen Musik, der er seine Inspiration verdankt, in Form von "In the name of Bach" eine Widmung aufzunehmen.

Tja ... bei so einem Album steckt man als Schreiberling ganz schön in der Zwickmühle. Einerseits liebe ich die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach und gegen Metal-Guitar-Instrumentalalben habe ich normalerweise überhaupt nichts. Technisch gesehen hat Alex Masi die Kunst des Gitarrespielens drauf wie kaum ein anderer. Dummerweise sind es aber gerade die getragenen Stücke, die - nur mit Akustik-Gitarre bestritten - mich bei der Stange halten. Wenn's schneller wird, egal ob mit Akustik-, oder E-Gitarre, dann ist alles zwar sehr löblich gespielt, sehr gut gemeint, aber was bringt's, wenn die Musik von Bach auf einer Kirchenorgel bzw. mit klassischer Besetzung einfach besser kommt.

Tut mir irgendwie leid, aber wenn während 57 Minuten nichts als Gitarre zu hören ist, dann wirds einfach langweilig. Bach's Werke eignen sich einfach nicht für Solo-Gitarre, zumal, wenn diese nicht mal von irgendwelchen anderen Isntrumenten unterstützt wird. Bleibt also nur das folgende Fazit: Für Gitarrenspieler gibt's Anschauungsunterricht und Fingerübungen, für Bach-Fanatiker gibt's - auch wenn man die CD nicht oft anhören wird - zumindest eine neue Facette in der Sammlung. ALEX MASI, the guitar wizard, whose album "Neon shark" was nominated for a grammy in 1989 ("best rock instrumental album"), used his new own studio to record an instrumental album dedicated to J.S. Bach. Don't get me wrong, I love the music of Bach and ALEX MASI does a great job in playing works of Bach. Alex does a great job in playing the difficult music and melodies of Bach, but in my opinion this is just another album that is not able to carry the atmosphere of classical works to another assemble of instruments. 57 minutes of more or less pure guitar might be great for Bach fanatics and guitarists looking for great lesson stuff, but Bach's melodies are only one side of the coin ... the power, majesty, dynamics and evolving beauty of his music is the other side. I miss the power like that of an orchestra or a choir, the sound and harmonies built by different instruments. The low tempo tracks (mainly played with acoustic guitar) are able to build up athmosphere, but still aren't able to make this album a permanent guest in my CD player ... it simply does not touch my soul. People who listen to classic music, too, have works of Bach in their music shelf ... so why should they be interested in an guitar-oriented CD like that ? All people that want to make first contact with the music of Bach, won't do this by such an album. Guitarplayers and people who like (mainly) acoustic music get great guitar lessons and a good album, but for me the 57 minutes lack of dynamic changes and are not able to beg for my attention. 3 points
