Echolyn "Cowboys Poems For Free" english summary

ECHOLYN zählten zu den großen Hoffnungsträgern des Prog in den Neunzigern. Von einigen als legitime Erben Gentle Giants gefeiert, schaffte die Band sogar das fast Unmögliche, einen Major-Deal mit Sony. Doch 1996 war dann plötzlich Schluß mit lustig, was folgte waren Projekte wie Finneus Gauge oder Still/Allway Almost. Jetzt sind ECHOLYN mit einem neuen Studio-Album zurück.

„Cowboy Poems Free“ enthält zehn neue Songs und - wie die Band es selbst bezeichnet - vier musikalische Gedichte, welche dem Album auch den Titel gaben, und bei denen es sich um kurze Insrumentaltrax handelt. Musikalsich dürfte die Band immer noch primär die Frickel-Fraktion ansprechen, obwohl man zum einen auch einige wunderschöne ruhige Songs am Start hat und zum anderen generell deutlich weniger am Jazz angelehnt agiert, als zum Beispiel bei Finneus Gauge. Gentle-Giant - Einflüsse sind zwar noch vorhanden, aber es wäre völlig falsch, hier von Retro-Prog zu sprechen. ECHOLYN arbeiten stark songorientiert (klammert man die vier Poems mal aus, die eher als kurze Verbindungselemente denn als richtige Songs funktionieren ), die Titel sind zwischen fünf und sieben Minuten lang, Longtrack-Fetischisten kommen also nicht auf ihre Kosten. Durch die Hinzunahme eines zweiten Drummers ins feste Line-Up wird die Rhythmus-Sektion deutlich mehr betont, so dass manche Songs was die Percussions angeht schon fast Latin-Charakter haben.

Eine überaus interessante Mischung aus Rock, Prog, Funk und Jazz - schön, dass ECHOLYN zurück sind ! Wertung: 8

After four years of silence ECHOLYN is back in business. In the nineties ECHOLYN was for a lot of prog fans a kind of an new Gentle Giant, beside this the band got an major deal with Sony so all things should work well - but than the band break up. „Cowboy Poems Free“ features 10 new songs and 4 little instrumental trax (by the band called as „musical poems“). The trax are very strong song focussed, Gentle Giant influences are still there, but it would be more than wrong to call this kind of music „retro“. Comparing to „Finneus Gauge“ ECHOLYN use less jazz influences, the rhythm section became more important, so the band is working with an second drummer. No prog rock in the sense most people understand, but an really great comeback album. 8 points
