Dumme Frage. GREENSLADE fahren mit "Large afternoon" ein einfühlsames Melodic Neoprogrock-Album auf, das zwar nicht durch Komplexität besticht, dafür aber durch sensible Zurückhaltung besticht. Kein Gefrickel, keine Eskapaden ... just songs. Im Vordergrund stehen natürlich die Keyboards von Dave Greenslade und John Young. Alleine schon der wunderschöne Instrumentaltrack Large Afternoon lohnt die Anschaffung der CD. Vom Feeling her liegt das Album zwischen sanften ARENA, butterweichen IQ, der relaxten "Rajaz"-Atmosphäre von CAMEL sowie etwas Soft-Swing-Flair. Das Album balanciert oftmals stark an der Grenze zum Melodic Rock bzw. Poprock, macht aber nix, denn es taugt. Einzige Schwachstelle: der etwas ausdruckslose Gesang (der sich aber niemals im Ton vergreift) und - was mir mehr zu schaffen macht - der streckenweise peinlich künstlich klingende Keyboardsound, der einige Male mehr an Kaufhausmusik oder den MIDI-Soundtrack zu Leisure Suite Larry erinnert als an eine Musik-CD.

Wer mit künstlich klingenden Keyboards kein Problem hat, erhält eine melodische Easy-Listening Progrock-Scheibe für kalte Winterabende.

4 experienced musicians form the band GREENSLADE. Mastermind of the band is keyboarder DAVE GREENSLADE. "Large afternoon" is a sensitive melodic neoprog album. What you don't get: complex compositions and challenging songs. What you get: Straight songs in the range of soft ARENA, IQ and the relaxed atmosphere of CAMEL's "Rajaz". The album often drifts away into melodic rock and sometimes even poprock area, but luckily gets not too annoying in its simplicity. The album has two weak points: 1) the vocals which are not as impressive as the should sound in order to carry the songs, 2) the synthethic keyboard sounds which is sometimes closer to the MIDI-Soundtrack of Leisure Suite Larry than to a professional keyboard. Overall this is an easy listening progrock album for cold winter nights.
