Ivory Tower "Beyond the stars" english summary

Das 1998er Debutalbum der Kieler Progmetal-Band IVORY TOWER wurde überall als gelunger Einstieg gefeiert. Nun gibts mit "Beyond the stars".

Das Cover dieser CD spricht Bände. Nicht nur, daß es aussieht, wie eine schlechte Kopie seiner selbst (will sagen: des Covers des Debutalbums) ... nein, ich kann diese Pseudo-3D-Cover mitterweile echt nicht mehr sehen. Planeten, Weltall, Schachfiguren, egal ob per Airbrush oder High-Tech-Reflektions-Rendering ... aufhören !

Ähnlich ergehts mir mit der Musik, welche die IVORY TOWER-Fans in zwei Lager spalten wird - analog zur Dream Theater-Scheibe "Metropolis Part 2". Zwar immer noch unverkennbar IVORY TOWER, aber um ein Vielfaches technischer, komplizierter, einen ganzen Zacken härter und - oftmals unnötig - verschachtelter ... was auf Kosten vieler Songs geht, wenn man das tolle Debütalbum als Meßlatte anlegt. Konnte man beim Debüt dank immer wieder griffiger Gesangslinien noch über die Schwächen des Gesangs von Andre Fischer hinwegsehen (Beyond the stars, When thoughts are running wild, Flight into the self), so offenbaren sich diese jetzt vermehrt auf dem Silbertablett. Während auf dem Debüt noch alles wie aus einem Guß klang, wirkt das neue Werk oftmals konstruiert und nach Komplexität bemüht. Versteht mich nicht falsch: Wer ein druckvolles und kompromißloses Progmetal-Album sucht, der wird bei IVORY TOWER immer noch gut bedient. Das beweisen Songs wie der 11-Minüter Foreboding oder das 6-minütige Secret in me oder das atmosphärisch dichte Treehouse, bei dem man das Intro besser weg-gelassen hätte (ätzend nach Dose klingendes Synthi-Orchester).

Wenn IVORY TOWER den Weg weiterbeschreiten, der sich mit "Beyond the stars" andeutet, dann sollten sie aufpassen, daß daraus nicht ein "Far beyond the fans" wird. Wertung: 4

The 1998 debut album of german progmetalles IVORY TOWER got very good reviews in the international press. Now the sequel "Beyond the stars" has been released. The cover of the new album is quite symbolic for the entire album. It looks like a copy of the cover of the debut album which tries to say "Hey look, I am trying to be the same, although I am trying hard to be different". By the way: I am sick of all those pseudo 3D-covers with planets, space and chessboards ... here's another one again. Let's come to the music. It's still IVORY TOWER what you hear. "Beyond the stars" is much heavier, much more technical and (in my opinion) overstressed with complexity than the great debut album. As the album is heavier, the vocals of Andre Fischer are in a stronger competition with the instruments. They vocals suceeded on the debut by their melody, but here they show their weak points more clearly (Beyond the stars, When thoughts are running wild, Flight into the self). Don't get me wrong: You still get some very good and powerful progmetal songs (the great 11-minute Foreboding, the melodic Secret in me, the dense and atmospheric Treehouse) but I am afraid that this album could separate the old fans like the new Dream Theater album did: Technical complexity kills song structure and melody ! IVORY TOWER should be aware of the fact, that this step is the best thing to get "Beyond the fans" instead of "Beyond the stars". 4 points
