Mattsson "Another Dimension" english summary

LARS ERIC MATTSSON wurde bereits 1985 von Mike Varney entdeckt. In der Zwischenzeit hat Lars 3 Alben "Eternity" (1988), "No surrender" (1989) und "Electrical Voodoo" (1991) aufgenommen. Zusammen mit dem schwedischen Sänger Conny Lind, Drummer Tony Mattsson und Basser Michael Ahlksog enstand 1992 die Band VISION. 1995 stieß der Sänger Bjorn Lodin zur Band. Bjorn hatte vorher in der Band BALTIMORE gesungen, entschied sich aber nach dem Abgang Nikolo Kotzev's (BRAZEN ABBOT) für eine neue Bleibe.1996 erschien dann das VISION Album "Till the end of time", 1997 kümmerte sich Lars um ein neues Solo-Album ("Obsession"). Im Herbst 1999 fing Lars mit den Arbeiten zum vorliegenden Album "Another dimension" an, bei dessen Verwirklichung er einige Freunde als Gastmusiker gewinnen konnte (siehe oben).

Auf dem Programm steht technisch versierter Double-Bassdrum Melodic Progressive Powermetal der Marke KENZINER & Co. mit klassischen Einflüssen und Hardrock-Elementen. Die ersten drei Tracks Hell, Crash and burn und Don't chain my mind stellen das eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. Besonders angenehm fällt auf, daß sich LARS ERIC MATTSON im Gegensatz zu KENZINER und MALMSTEEN mehr auf die Rhythmusgitarre konzentriert anstatt sich mit einer Vielzahl von Soli zu beweihräuchern. Durchschnaufen kann man bei der Ballade Angel blue, bevor es mit dem grimmig stampfenden Burn the witch in RAINBOW/PURPLE-Regionen geht. Doublebassdrum pur hagelt es mit Burning my soul, orientalische Klänge wehen auf dem progmetallig frickeligen Titeltrack. Das letzte Albumdrittel, beginnend ab Road of Babylon ist eher im Melodic Metal Genre beheimatet, Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel: Wait for the angels (melodischer Progmetal) und Cry no more, das bluesige Reggae-Züge aufweist.

Bjorn Lodin's Stimme erinnert zwar an ROGER CHAPMAN, jedoch hätte ein Metal-Shouter dem Album mehr Härte verliehen. So tendiert das gute Album im Großen und Ganzen eher in die Melodic Rock, Melodic Progressive Metal Ecke. Wertung: 6

Lars Eric Mattson was discovered by Mike Varney in 1985. After several solo albums and albums with his own band VISION Lars started working on his new album "Another dimension" in autumn 1999 with some of his friends appearing guest musicians (see line-up above). Yes, MATTSSON is a guitar hero, too, but he is one of the few who serves the songs instead of playing them to death. The music on "Another dimension" is somewhere between progressive symphonic metal in the style of KENZINER and melodic metal/rock. The voice of Bjorn Lodin is quite unique as it somtimes reminds of Roger Chapman. Durng the first half of the album you get lots of doublebass-drum driven songs with great drive and some classic / progressive inclination (like the great Don't chain my mind or the evil Burn the witch. The second half of the album is somehow more into the melodic metal genre. In my opinion a real metal shouter would have added more power and strength to this album, but I must admit that the vocals are very unique the way they are. A very good album for fans that like both melodic rock/metal and progressive metal. 6 points
