Prospect "#1" english summary

Aus dem slovenischen Ljubljana stammt das Quintett PROSPECT. 1999 nahmen die Jungs ihr erstes Album auf und bekamen aufgrund ihres eigenproduzierten Videos zum Song Crossing over prompt die nationale TV-Auszeichnung der hoffnungsvollsten Band des Jahres.

Das Potential dieser Band steht ausser Frage. PROSPECT spielen Progressive Metal jenseits der ausgetrampelten Klischees. Manchmal tendieren sie zu cleanen Guitarsounds und komplexen Arrangements, dann wieder zu metallisch bretternden Ufern, was schon aus dem Opener Crossing over ersichtlich wird. Auch Sänger Simon lässt seine Vocals in solchen Fällen von normaler Stimmlage in Richtung hoher Melodic-Speed-Metal-Stimme driften. Was die Instrumente und die Vocals angeht, ist eigentlich alles im Lot, aber dennoch will während der 38 Minuten keine richtige Stimmung aufkommen, denn obwohl sie Jungs redlich um dezente Abwechslung bemühen (Seven voices) und reichlich gute Passagen vorhanden sind, fehlt es durchgehend an den entscheidenen Hooks und dem berühmten roten Faden, denn meistens verzetteln sich die Songs in erzwungen treibenden Passagen. Irgendwie schade, denn Songs wie das stellenweise wirklich packende Concept of the end oder das Brett Whales hätten den nötigen Tick Ohrwurmqualität wirklich verdient; selbiges gilt auch für das an Neoprog-Ufern spielende Progmetal-Instrumental Prospect.

Von einer Progressive Force aus Slovenien kann man bei Prospect noch nicht sprechen. Wenn es die Band schafft, nicht ganz so wild umherzukomponieren und stattdessen mehr Wert auf eingängige Melodieführung zu legen, dann sieht die Sache schon ganz anders aus. Wertung: 5

PROSPECT are a young progmetal band from Ljubljana in Slovenia. "#1" is their first self-produced album. PROSPECT play progressive metal with melodic powermetal and heavy progressive rock inclinations. PROSPECT sound fresh and are not walking on common progmetal paths. Sometimes they're using clean guitar sounds and complex arrangements, other times they get real heavy and vocalist Simon Jovanovic changes his vocals regarding to the music from normal to melodic-speed-metal vocals, when it is needed. Instruments and vocals are very well done, but somehow this album does not kick. PROSPECT try let their songs not get boring but this is not then point. There are not enough hooks, there is not enough catchy'n'constant structure in the songs and often the songs are running against the wall with powerful passages that sound like they have been constructed into the songs instead of smoothly integrated. It's a pity as songs like Concept of the end, Whales and the instrumental Prospect are very promising.

At the moment PROSPECT are not a progressive force for the international area, but if the band manages to compose more smoothly (thinking of developing melodies) then PROSPECT will attract more attention, that's for sure. 5 points
