Shadow Keep "Corruption within" english summary

Schon einige Monate als QUEENSRYCHE-Reinkarnation (frühe 80er Phase von Queensryche) angepriesen werden die Briten SHADOW KEEP. Die Band existiert seit 1999 und hat es scheinbar sofort geschafft, ihr Debut "Corruption within" bei Limb/Inside Out unterzubringen.

Für mich klingen SHADOW KEEP nach allem ... nur nicht an eine Verquickung aus frühen CRIMSON GLORY und QUEENSRYCHE. Höhepunkte des Albums sind das mächtige Dark tower, der Nackenbrecher Mark of the Usurper sowie das stimmungsvolle Silver sword. Musikalisch-metallisch ist bei SHADOW KEEP alles am richtigen Platz ... druckvoller Sound, fette Beats und spielfreudige Gitarren. Schwachpunkte tun sich besonders in der Melodiefraktion auf: den Vocals fehlt zu oft der rote Melodiefaden und wenn wir schon bei den Vocals sind: wer Rogue M. mit Geoff Tate und Midnight auf eine Stufe stellt, der hat nicht genau hingehört. Der gute Rogue besitzt bei weitem noch nicht den Stimmumfang und die Souveränität dieser beiden Gesangsikonen ... im Gegenteil ... besonders in hohen Lagen wirkt das Ganze ziemlich quäkend und bebend; das gilt übrigens auch für den Hidden Track "Queen of the ryche".

Die vollmundigen Versprechungen bzgl. QUEENSRYCHE und CRIMSON GLORY halte ich für maßlos übertrieben, denn es gibt hier weder Spannungsbögen wie auf "Rage for order" oder Erinnerungen an FATES WARNING's "Disconnected", wie es uns die Bandinfo nahelegen will. Drehen wir den Spieß um und bezeichnen SHADOW KEEP als eine verheißungsvolle Melodic Powermetal-Band im Stil der 80er ... dann wird ein guter Schuh draus. Metalfans sollten sich auf jeden Fall mit SHADOW KEEP vertraut machen ... melodie- und stimmungsverliebte Progmetaller sind hier weitestgehend fehl am Platz. Wertung: 5

Founded 1999, SHADOW KEEP from the U.K. are promoted as reincarnation of early QUEENSRYCHE with the atmosphere of FATES WARNING's "Disconnected" and early CRIMSON GLORY. Sorry but that's exactly what the don't sound like. Some riffing reminded me of that bands but surely not a single piece of their atmosphere was to be found. SHADOW KEEP are a young and very promising heavy metal band with some power metal and a few progmetal inclinations leading to a mix of 90ies melodic powermetal and 80ies raw heavy metal. Highlights are: Dark tower, the headbangin' Mark of the usurper and the atmospheric Silver sword. The music is well done and well performed. I don't agree with the bandinfo on Rogue M. sounding like Geoff Tate and Midnight. Rogue is a good and very talented singer, but he is not able to reach neither the spectre nor the emotionality of Geoff's and Midnight's style. As a matter of fact, the vocal lines lack some straight melody concept.

Fans of melodic and atmospheric metal could be wrong here ... but pure metal fans should check this band 'cause SHADOW KEEP have released a very promising debut ... unfortunately it is promoted in a way which causes expectations that can't be met. 5 points
