USM "Silver step child" english summary

Wie manche von Euch aus dem Line-Up ersehen können, handelt es sich bei USM um die Mannen von BALANCE OF POWER, mit der Ausnahme, dass Basser Tony Ritchie auch für die Vocals verantwortlich zeichnet.

Musikalisch gibts melodischen Heavyrock irgendwo zwischen ROYAL HUNT und Industrial-angehauchtem Metal. Leider präsentieren sich so ziemlich alle Songs etwas lieblos ... als wären sie in größter Eile aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt worden. Was dann übrigbleibt sind Songs, die alle ihre starken Phasen haben (meist die mehrstimmigen Refrains im Stile DC COOPERs), der Rest jedoch seelenlos durch planlose Guitarsoli oder zu ungestüme Tempoausbrüche an die Wand geschmettert wird. Das Albumcover lässt allerdings den Schluss zu, dass man bewusst versucht hat, eine destruktive Neuzeit-Atmosphäre zu fahren ... was irgendwe gelungen ist. Highlights sind das balladeske It's all over now bei dem die Vocals zu stark gefiltert wirken und das wabernde The weird and the wonderful, das durch einen hervorragenden hymnischen Refrain zu Buche schlägt.

Zu wenig, um aus der Vielzahl ähnlicher Releases auch nur annähernd herauszustechen. Wertung: 3

As you might have seen, USM has the same line-up as BALANCE OF POWER with one exception: on this release bass player Tony Ritchie does the vocals, too. The music of the United States of Mind (USM) is melodic heavy metal in the style of ROYAL HUNT mixed with some industrial ingredients. Unfortunately it seems that the songwriting was done in a hurry or not carefully enough ... resulting in songs which all have very good parts (especially the chorus) but also destructive elements like chaotic guitar solos or up-tempo-eruptions which are too much to keep the song inside it's shell. Looking at the cover artwork the destuctive elements might have been created on purpose. Two very good songs (the ballad It's all over now with the vocals too polished and the soft The weird and the wonderwolf) are not enough to survive in all those melodic metal releases which are released these days. 3 points
