CARL GROVES dürfte Euch als Keyboarder, Gitarrist und Sänger von SALEM HILL bekannt sein. Mit "Branch on the ground" legt Carl sein erstes Solo-Album vor.

Natürlich kommt von jedem die Frage "Klingt wie Salem Hill, oder ?". Natürlich gibts bzgl. des Gesangs und einiger Akkorde Parallelen zu SALEM HILL, wie das halt so ist, wenn man bei SALEM HILL Sänger ist und am Songwriting beteiligt ist. Auf seinem Solo-Album geht CARL GROVES jedoch andere Wege. Die E-Gitarre steht lange nicht so stark im Vordergrund, der Progrock-Anteil ist auch bei weitem nicht so dominant wie auf dem neusten SALEM HILL-Output ... macht aber nichts, denn Carl kann sich zu Recht auf seine einfühlsamen und ausdruckstarken Kompositionen verlassen.
Songs wie z.B. Hopeless circles zeigen Klasse und Format. Carl webt aus zarten Melodien, Akustik-Rock-Zutaten und den von SALEM HILL gewohnten mehrstimmigen Gesangseinlagen akustischen Progressive Rock, der - einem Baum im Wind gleich - atmet und jeden Song schlüssig über die Ziellinie bringt. Das große Plus des Albums ist vor allem der schleichende Abwechslungsreichtum (Paradebeispiel: Unless you want it to). Mit A prayer ist auch ein schräger Progrock-Track und mit Mine for the taking ein packender Freistil-10-Minüter am Start. Während zwei, drei Stellen stimmt's mit der Abstimmung nur 99%ig, aber "who cares" solange dem guten Carl Progrock-Balladen wie Melt me, vergnügte Songs wie Walking on diamonds, Klavier/Gesang-Hymnen wie Branch upon the ground oder solch furioses Akustikgitarre-Spiel wie während des irish-folkigen Instrumental Norwegian Ire aus der Feder fliessen.

Freunde akustischen bzw. leisen Progrocks sollten hier ebenso zuschlagen wie SALEM HILL-Fans, denen vor allem "The robbery of murder" gefiel.

CARL GROVES is known as keyboarder, guitarplayer and singer of SALEM HILL. "Branch on the ground" is Carl's first solo album.
Of course this album sounds a bit like SALEM HILL but what did you expect from an album of a man, who sings at SALEM HILL and participates in their songwriting process ? ;-) But it is important to point out, that this is not a "sounds like SALEM HILL"-album. CARL GROVES's music goes different paths. The electric guitar is not that dominating as on the new SALEM HILL output, but that's o.k. because Carl can rely on his expressive and sensitive compositions. Carl Groves managed to weave great acoustic progrock out of soft melodies, acoustic elements and vocal arrangements known from SALEM HILL. This album is like a tree in the wind ... it breathes and grows gently. The big point is the gentle variety, for example: A prayer is a weird progrock track, Mine for the taking is a freestyle 10-minute song. Melt me is a great progrock ballad, Walking on diamonds is a happy song, Norwegian ire brings in some folk and Branch upon the ground is a damn fine piano-vocals hymn.
This varied album is a must-buy for fans of acoustic and silent progrock and of course for fans of SALEM HILL, who especially liked "The robbery of murder". Great solo debut !
