"En route" knüpft nahtlos an der letzten HS-Veröffentlichung an und bietet eine mannigfaltige Achterbahnfahrt durch instrumentellen Prog, Space-Jazz, klassische Einflüsse und orchestralem Inferno; basierend auf den Erzählungen von J.K. Huysmans.
Der Opener Mars, the bringer of war ist ein düsterer und bedrohlicher Song, vollgestopft mit befremdlichen Akkorden und einem Bolera-ähnlichen Rhythmus. Kernbestandteil des Albums ist der opulente Vierteiler Against the grain, während dem insbesondere Piano, Micromoog, Rhodes Piano, Arp Strings und Orgel die Hauptrolle spielen. Der Sound von HERMETIC SCIENCE ist nicht leicht zu greifen, aber er ist zu greifen ... und wenn man ihn mal gegriffen hat, dann offenbaren sich interessante und symphonische Einsichten irgendwo zwischen ALAN PARSONS, frühen ELOY, VERSUS X und dezentem Psychedelic. Ein weiterer Highlight ist Raga hermeticum, ein 9 minütiger Track mit 10saitiger Lyra, fernöstlicher Percussion und orientalischen Flötentönen, der sich schleichend zum furiosen Piano/Orgel/Progrock-Finale En route hochschaukelt.

Ein erstklassiges und höchstabwechslungsreiches Prog-Instrumentalalbum für alle knallharten Progmaniacs.

| Summary |
HERMETIC SCIENCE's debut album (released in 1997) brought in some very innovative air in the prog scene. Mastermind of HERMETIC SCIENCE is keyboard player Ed Macan. On "En route", progrock fans get a wild mixture of progressive instrumental, ECM styled spatial jazz, classical style and orchestral inferno. "En route" is based on the novels of J.K. Huysmans.
The opener Mars, the bringer of war is a dark and threatening track with lots of strange sounds and a bolero-type rhythm. Against the grain consists of 4 parts, overall lasting about 20 minutes. The piano plays an important role here, as well as the micromoog, a digital pipe organ, an arp string ensemble and electronic harpsichord. I have never listened to an Hermetic Science album before ... and I am quite surprised how strange, how insteresting and how symphonic their music is. The best way to describe the 4-track episode Against the grain is to imagine a mixture of early ALAN PARSONS, early ELOY, APOGEE or VERSUS X and some slight psychedelic 70ies new age progressive rock atmosphere, decorated with freakin' organ, jazz elements and groovin' beats. Another highlight is Raga hermeticum, a 9 minute track featuring a 10 string lyra, eastern percussion and oriental flute tunes and of course the weird piano/organ-progrock smasher En route.
A great, an unique and entertaining no-easy-listening instrumental progrock album for all the die-hard prog-weirdos out there !
