Lee Aaron and the swingin Barflies "Slick Chick" english summary

Kaum eine Künstlerin zieht mich so in ihren stimmlichen Bann wie die Kanadierin Lee Aaron. Egal ob die 80er-Metal-Alben "Metal Queen" und "Call of the wild", das etwas mainstreamigere Hitalbum "Lee Aaron" oder die erstklassigen Hardrock-Alben "Bodyrock" und "Some girls do" ... was die Frau angepackt hat, ist ihr einfach gelungen. Dies galt auch für das melancholisch moderne Album "Emotional rain" sowie das Alternative-Projekt 2 PRECIOUS (1996). Obwohl sie so manchen sturen Metal/Hardrock-Fan durch ihre Stilwechsel verloren hat ... der Großteil der Fans ist ihr treu geblieben, denn egal welchen Weg sie geht, sie geht ihren Weg glaubwürdig, professionell, neugierig und indem sie auf ihr Herz hört, anstatt auf Verkaufszahlen oder Klischees Rücksicht zu nehmen.

Umso größer war für mich die Überraschung, daß LEE AARON mit dem Ensemble THE SWINGIN' BARFLIES im Jahr 2000 ein Blues/Jazz-Album namens "Slick Chick" veröffentlicht hat, welches in Deutschland leider kaum Aufmerksamkeit geernet hat und schwer zu bekommen ist. Auf "Slick Chick" hat sich Lee Songs von Jazz/Blues-Künstlern vorgeknöpft, die sie seit ihrer Kindheit beeinflusst haben, darunter z.B. Peggy Lee, Nina Simone und Dinah Washington.

Was soll ich zu diesem Album groß sagen. Eine der größten Stimmen dieser Zeit fährt eine Jazz/Blues-Palette auf, die bzgl. ihrer Intensität ihresgleichen sucht. Von beschwingtem Jazz (z.B. He ain't got rhythm, Twisted), lässigem Blues (z.B. Evil gal blues) über fingerschnippenden "dirty talkin' Jazz (I'd love to), schleichende Ohrwürmern der Marke Why don't you right, bedrückende, verrauchte Songs voller Zweifel und Brandy (z.B: Chaser for the blues) bis hin zu erotischen Anschmiegern (In the dark) und intensiven Melancholikern (Small day tomorrow) ist feinste Qualität vertreten. Wer sich vor free-jazzigen Planlosigkeiten fürchtet, kann aufatmen ... die gibts hier nicht ... stattdessen gibt's Gefühl pur.

Stimmlich liefert die gute Lee auf dieser Scheibe ihr bisheriges Meisterstück ab ... egal ob hauchend, verraucht, laut, leise, zweifelnd, hoffnungsvoll, zum Himmel aufschreiend oder gar (während Doodlin') scattend: diese 53 Minuten sind ein Ohrenschmaus erster Güte. Der hervorragende Sound und die extrem feinfühlige Instrumentierung tun ihr Übriges.

Wer mit Lee Aaron eine exzellente, charismatische Frauenstimme - losgelöst von einer musikalischen Schublade - verbindet, der wird bei "Slick Chick" dahinschmelzen. Wer jetzt denkt, diese Scheibe sei "für den Blues/Jazz-Ausflug einer ehemalige Metal-Queen nicht übel", dem sei gesagt, daß "Slick Chick" selbst in den reinrassigsten Blues- und Jazz-Fachpublikationen Höchstnoten bekam ... zu Recht !

Ob Lee irgendwann mal zum Hardrock zurückkehrt ? Angesichts solcher Alben rückt diese Frage in den Hintergrund, denn "Slick Chick" ist ein Blues/Jazz-Ausnahmealbum mit einer weiblichen Ausnahmestimme, das bei keinem Musikliebhaber im Regal fehlen darf. Wertung: 10

There are not many musicians that are able to drag their fans through different types of projects and changes. For me it is a pleasure and highly interesting experience (every time) to follow Lee Aaron on her path to herself ... on her self-honest and self-confident path of making music. After great hardrock-albums like "Bodyrock" or "Some girls do" Lee's modern and melancholic album "Emotional rain" parted ways with what the fans expected. In my opinion this was a great step which has lead to a great album. Her next album was the 2 PRECIOUS - CD, where Lee sang in the alternative rock vein. Now Lee again follows her heart to worship artists that influenced her all over her life ... jazz/blues artists like Peggy Lee, Nina Simone und Dinah Washington.

So what's the conclusion ? One of the greatest female voices of nowadays and the ensemble THE SWINGIN' BARFLIES have recorded a jazz/blues CD called "Slick chick". Man what can I say ? This CD comes in great sound and is stuffed with big emotions. Don't be afraid .... this is not a free-jazz weirdo-album and of course it isn't a clichee-blues album either. This great records contains happy swinging jazz (He ain't got the rhythm), cool blues (Evil gal blues), finger-snappin' dirty-talkin jazz (I'd love to), some deep emotional melancholic smoke'n'brandy-drained tracks (i.e. Chaser for the blues), sensitive sexy songs (In the dark) and intense melancholy (Small day tomorrow).
I love Lee's voice and her style of singing, especially on her hardrock albums "Bodyrock" and "Some girls do" but what she did on this record is simply spectacular and for sure vocally her best album. No matter if she sings loudly, silently, thoughtful, full of doubt, hopefully, screaming to heaven, happy or some kind of scatting (Doodlin') ... these 53 minutes are simply stunning. Some people might think "Yeah, not a bad jazz/blues album for an ex-metal-girl." These people should take into account, that "Slick chick" earned spectacular reviews even in die-hard jazz/blues magazines.

If LEE AARON means for you "great female vocalist" instead of "metal queen" this album will let your heart melt in sweet, entertaining and high class jazz and blues. I don't care wether Lee will return to making hardrock ... as long as she goes her way this self-confident and honestly, she will stay one of the musically most interesting artists that I know. 10 points
