Savatage "Poets and madman" english summary

Lang, lang ist's her das letzte Sava-Studio-Album "Wake of magellan". In der Zwischenzeit haben Gitarrist Al Pitrelli und Sänger Zak Stevens die Band verlassen (mehr dazu im Interview). Mastermind Jon Oliva ist auf "Poets and madman" wieder voll für den Gesang zuständig und um SAVATAGE wieder deutlicher vom TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA abzugrenzen, hat man härtetechnisch einen Zahn zugelegt und etwas Bombast abgestreift.

Eins steht fest: Wer auf "Poets and madmen" den Bombast von "Handful of rain" oder "Wake of Magellan" sucht, sucht größenteils vergeblich. Schon irgendwie komisch, den klaviergetränkten Savatage-Sound ohne Zak's ausdrucksstarke Stimme zu hören. Musikalisch geht "Poets and madmen" stark in Richtung "Gutter ballet", d.h. rauh, abwechslungsreich und streckenweise recht heftig ... der Opener Stay with me awhile hat all diese Komponenten. Erfrischender wirkt da There in silence ... dramatische Vocals, grimmige Riffs und vor allem der Sequencer-Einsatz machen diesen Schlepper zu einem der interessantesten, wenn auch nicht besten Tracks des Albums. Die Single-Auskopplung Commissar bietet alles, was SAVATAGE gross gemacht hat ... Dramatik, Symphonik, Hymnik, Chöre, treibene Riffs und einen begeisternden Mountain-King JON OLIVA an den Vocals. Während der zweiten Albumhälfte begeistern das von melancholischem Klavier durchzogene Bombast-Feuerwerk Surrender sowie der obliatorische Schlusstrack in Form einer zweifelnden Bombast-Ballade (Back to a reason).

"Poets and madmen" ist natürlich wieder ein waschechtes Savatage-Album geworden, das vor allem die Fans der alten Scheiben in Ehren halten werden. Die allgemeine Euphorie bzgl. dieses Albums kann ich nicht ganz teilen, denn einige Male treten die Kompositionen zu stark auf der Stelle (z.B. I seek power, The rumor , Drive und Awaken), sind nicht aus einem Guß und leider sind gesanglich nicht mehr so viele sich großartig aufbauende Melodien am Start wie auf den Vorgängeralben. Highlights wie z.B. der überragende 10-Minuten-Opus Morphine Child ziehen das Ganze aber gerade noch glatt.

Ich liebe diese Band wie kaum eine andere Band ... bei Allen von uns haben SAVATAGE einen riesigen Stein im Brett. Wenn ich "Poets and madmen" jedoch nüchtern betrachte, kann ich - so weh es mir tut - nur ein "gut" vergeben, wenn auch mit deutlicher Tendenz nach oben.

Wer sich "Poets and Madmen" kauft, sollte auf die Box-Version zurückgreifen, denn sie enthält neben einem Aufkleber und einem Poster einen Bonus-Track Jesus saves (Live in Germany) und einen Daten-Track mit dem Video zu Handful of rain. Wer über die Thematik dieses Konzeptalbums etwas erfahren will, dem sei unser Savatage-Interview angeraten. Wertung: 6

Many months have gone by since the last album of SAVATAGE, "Wake of magellan". Since that time, singer Zak Stevens and guitarist Al Pitrelli have left the band; Zak because he wants to dedicate more time to his young family, Al left for Megadeth. On "Poets and madmen" Jon Oliva takes care of all the vocals. As the bombast-borders between the TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA and SAVATAGE melted down too much, the band decided to return back to heavier tunes, and this can easily be heard on "Poets and madmen".

To make on thing clear: I love this band and I love their music, but somehow I can't dive into this album as into the previous ones. Of course, "Poets and madmen" is a real SAVATAGE album in the vain of "Gutter ballet". And it contains great tracks with bombast, power and elegy, like the melancholic ballad Back to a reason. There in the silence is another great track with power, dramatic vocals, evil riffs and (!) sequencer, making this a very refreshing song. Commissar contains all elements that made SAVATAGE so big ... powerful choirs, strong riffs, dramatic atmosphere and the one and only mountain king at his best on the vocals. The biggest track is the impressive 10-minute-mini-opera Morphine child. Unfortunately there are some songs on this album that somehow seem to stand still, aren't fluent enough and are missing the big melodies that were used from the preceding albums, the tracks are I seek power, The rumor , Drive and Awaken. Don't get me wrong ... this is very good album ... but although it hurts to say that ... it's definetely not their best but perhaps I am more the bombast-type-of-fan.

BTW: If you buy the boxed version of the album, you get a poster, a sticker, a bonus-track (Jesus saves recorded live in Germany) and a CD-ROM-track containing the video of Handful of rain. 6 points
