Yngwie Malmsteen "War to end all wars" english summary

"Alchemy" war ein richtig geiles Malmsteen-Album, bei dem lediglich der etwas matschige und saftlose Sound für ein wenig Mis-Stimmung sorgte. Mal schauen, was der Meister mit "War to end all wars" volbracht hat.

Seit Beginn an liebe ich die Musik und die Kompositionen von Yngwie Malmsteen, jedes seiner Alben kommt bei mir regelmäßig auf den Plattenteller bzw. in den CD-Spieler. Was der gute Yngwie allerdings mit "War to end all wars" abgeliefert hat ist ein produktionstechnisches Spiel mit dem Feuer ! Das CD-Booklet zeigt vom Design gute Ansätze, wird aber auf der Rückseite des Booklets von unpassendem 08/15-3D-Computergraphik-Kitsch mit Füssen getreten ... da kann man sich nur kopfschüttelnd der Musik widmen.

Doch auch hier tut die Produktion alles was in ihrer Macht steht, um den Hörer zu fordern. Der Sound ist matschig und dumpf ... von Stereo kann hier kaum die Rede sein. Einige Male denke ich ich mir: "Vielleicht hat Yngwie ja versucht, soundtechnisch zurück in die 80er zu gehen und der Sound ist volle Absicht". Dann aber stelle ich immer wieder erschrocken fest, daß es sicher nicht seine Absicht war, auf Proberaum-Demo-Niveau zu sinken und während Molto Arpeggiosa breites Rauschen unterzumischen. Man weint bittere Tränen wenn man sich vorstellt, wie die krachenden Kompositionen hätten klingen können. Das einzige was man deutlich hört sind Gitarre und Bass ... aber was soll das bringen ? Die Toms klingen wie Blechdosen, die Bassdrum plöppt mit Michael Schanze zu seinen besten Zeiten, die Keyboards muss man mit Oma's Hörgerät suchen und Mark Boals gibt Alles um gegen die Gitarrenwand anzusingen.

Zur Ehrenrettung sei gesagt: Nach einer Weile gewöhnt man sich an den Sound und fühlt sich angenehm an "Marching out"-Zeiten erinnert. Man findet mit Prophet of Doom, dem melodischen Bad Reputation, dem neoklassischen Masquerade, der Ballade Miracle of life, dem düsteren Tarot sowie dem grandiosen Instrumental Instrumental institution (geile Guitar/Keyboard-Duelle !) doch noch die erhofften Juwelen, an denen man sich hochziehen kann. Diese Scheibe muss man sich "schönhören" ... glücklicherweise klappt das halbwegs. Für un-enttäuschbare Malmsteen-Fans sollte die Versöhnung mit diesem Album auf mittlere Frist kein Problem sein, sieht man mal von der komplett bescheurten Reggae(häääääääääääh ???)-Nummer Black sheep of the family ab ... über diesen Gag hätte ich als Hidden Track auf einem 150%-Kracher-Album lachen können, hier nicht.

Die Tracks auf "War to end all wars" gehören zu dem härtesten, was Malmsteen jemals auf die Beine gestellt hat; die nichtsagenden Gesangslinien während dreier Songs (Wizard, Catch 22 and Wild one)und der Sound ziehen leider etwas den Zahn ... daher kann man diese Scheibe wirklich nur den beinharten Malmsteen-Fanatikern empfehlen. Kompositorisch empfehlenswert (7 Punkte), aber 1 Punkt Abzug für den charmanten aber unzeitgemäßen Sound sowie 1 Strafpunkt für den Reggae-Rohrkrepierer. Wertung: 5

"Alchemy" has been a great MALMSTEEN album ... the one and only weak point of "Alchemy" is the weak and dry sound. The sound of "War to end all wars" is even worse. The drums sound like mono, Mark Boals has to give his best to compete with the loud guitars, the keyboards are far away in the background ... in the foreground of the mix are the shredding guitars and the damn groovin' bass. The sound really is "old school". I don't care if it came to this sound by a lack of quality management or if that sound was done on purpose. I love Yngwie's music and this goes for this album, too. "War to end all wars" is the heaviest album that Yngwie has recorded in years ... together with the raw sound it reminds me of his "Marching out" era.

"War to end all wars" is a challenge for all MLAMSTEEN-maniacs out there ... love it or hate it. You get three weak songs (Wizard, Catch 22 and Wild one ... who lack of vocal melodies) but the rest are real smashers. Prophet of doom kicks butt, Crucify is an aggressive hammer, Bad reputation is a catchy hymn, Masquerade features lots of neoclassic atmosphere, Tarot offers good'old Yngwie-mystic and Miracle of life brings the usual ballad (this one is dedicated to his son Antonio). The instrumentals Instrumental institution (great guitar/keyboard duells) and the f****in dark Molto arpeggiosa are simply not from this planet ... coooool ! So overall this would be 7 points (very recommendable) but given the weak sound (some noise during silent parts and dumb artefact effects because of two much volume during Prophet of doom and Crucify) and the useless reggae-track Black sheep of the family "War to end all wars" gets shining 5 points.

Don't get me wrong, Yngwie still is able to compose great songs ... but somehow this album seems not to be checked by a quality guy before releasing it ... hear at the sound and look at the booklet (what are those 3D-rendering scenes about ? They don't fit the front cover ...). Anyway ... Malmsteen-fans will not be dissappointed by this album ... they will have to discover its charme and then they will love it, like I do. I would love to hear this album in high quality sound with full keyboards and full vocals ... it would be a killer !!! Perhaps it would be a nice dedication to all Yngwie-maniacs to release a rerecording of "War to end all wars" on a bonus CD with the next album ! 5 points
