AMYRIS wurden 1998 als UNIO MYSTICA gegründet. Im Jahr 2000 wurde die Band in AMYRIS umbenannt. Vorliegendes Doppelreview beschäftigt sich mit "Desolate messiah" (dem ersten Demo der Band) und dem neusten Demo "Desire for justice".

AMYRIS spielen progressiven Metal mit einfühlsamer und gleichwohl treibender Gitarrenarbeit, effizient eingesetzten Keyboards and durchdachten Kompositionen, die neben sanften Elementen auch druckvolle Elemente enthalten. Der Gesang bemüht sich auf dem Debütalbum um Variabilität und Charisma, erreicht dieses Ziel jedoch nicht. Die Stärken der Band sind die Melodien, die Variationen, der meist eingängige Drive sowie die unterstützenden Keyboards. Drei Songs des Debüts zeigen das Potential der Band: Tightrope walk (gute Spieltechnik, weitläufige Kompositionen, toller Abwechslungsreichtum und dynamische Komposition), der 8-Minüter Sad man II und das treibende Question of guilt (tolles Gitarrensolo). Stark verbesserungswürdig erscheint der Gesang, insbesondere bezüglich des Volumens, der Melodieführung und der Präzision. Alles in allem verdient sich "Desolate messiah" 4 Punkte.
Die nachfolgende Demo, "Desire for justice" zeigt einen deutlichen Fortschritt in die richtige Richtung.
Der Sound ist kraftvoller, die Gitarren aggressiver, die Keyboards dynamischer und der Gesang einen Tick ausdrucksstärker. Mit Sacred secrecy ist den Jungs ihr bislang bester Song gelungen ... tolle Gitarrenarbeit, tolle Keyboarduntermalung und gut durcharrangierte Gesangsleistung. Temple of spite ist leider nicht so stark aber mit Liberty of aviation halten Melodien, Dynamik und Abwechslungsreichtum wieder Einzug. Der Gesang ist - vor allem während der normal gesungenen Passagen - nach wie vor verbesserungsbedürftig ... auf dem Opener Sacred secrecy fällt das aber nicht so ins Gewicht, da die Vocals hier sehr oft grollen oder flüstern (kommt richtig gut). Die Ballade For eternity offeriert tolle Instrumentalarrangements (Klavier, Keyboardstreicher, Keyboardchor), jedoch können die Vocals den Song nicht tragen. "Desire for justice" zeigt deutliche kompositorische Verbesserungen und ist somit um einiges griffiger als der Vorgänger; verdient sich somit 5 Punkte (ganz knapp an der 6 vorbei).
| Fazit |
Beide Reviews zusammen ergeben 5 Punkte. Der auf "Desire for justice" zu hörende Fortschritt zeigt, daß das noch lange nicht alles war, was wir von AMYRIS erwarten können. Wir sind gespannt auf die nächste Veröffentlichung.

AMYRIS were founded in 1998 as UNIO MYSTICA. In the year 2000 the name was changed to AMYRIS.
This double review features their debut "Desolate messiah" and their latest demo "Desire for justice".
AMYRIS play melodic progressive metal with sensitive and driving guitars, efficiently used keyboards and well thought compositions. The compositions contain soft elements as well as powerful ingredients. The vocals on this first release try to sound varied (and they really are), but although they are somehow charismatic they are not convincing. The strengths of this band are the melodies, the variations, the straight drive and the supportive keyboards. Songs like Tightrope walk show how talented this band is ... good technical playing skills, wide spanning compositions, great variety and dynamics. Another great example of their talent is the 8 minute track Sad man - Part II as well as the driving Question of guilt (great sensitive guitar solo!). The only thing that should be enhanced are the vocals, especially concerning the vocal melodies / themes, precision and charisma. "Desolute messiah" overall earns 4 points.
The latest demo "Desire for justice" shows a big step in the right direction. The sound is stronger, the guitars are more aggreessive, the keyboards are more dynamic and the vocals are more charismatic and more evil.
Sacred secrecy offers great guitar work, atmospheric keyboards and stronger vocal arrangements.
Temple of spite is not that strong but Liberty of aviation
brings in big melodies, dynamic variety and good flair, although it sometimes is more a heavy progrock song than a progmetal track. The vocals - when singing normally - can still get better, but as they whispher or grunt more often during the opener Sacred secrecy, this weakness is hidden very good on this track.
The ballad For eternity is good concerning the instrumental arrangments (piano and keyboard strings with choir), but again ... the vocals can't carry along with the song. "Desire for justice" shows that AMYRIS have developed their skills especially concerning the compositions very well. So this release overall gets 5 points (very vey close to 6 points).
To sum up both reviews it's 5 points ... I'm sure that AMYRIS can easily get a little bit better ... this is a very promising bands which misses only a few adjustments to deliver a very good demo.
