"Sacred pathways" ist das fünfte ARTENSION-Album und wird vom schnellen Neoklassik-Hammer Voyage to nasca / Your victory eröffnet. Schon hier wird klar, daß die Herren ihre Instrumente im Schlaf beherrschen ... und dabei noch durchaus in der Lage sind, ansprechende Melodien und epische Momente aus dem Hut zu zaubern. Obwohl die Kompositionen nicht einfach zu spielen sein dürften, so sind sie doch eigentlich durchgängig in der Lage, Hooks im Ohr zu verankern und flüssig wirkt das Ganze allemal. Von straighten Krachern (Sacred pathways) über furiose und melodiöse Songs (Silent temple/The emperor) gibts bis hin zu rockenden Nummer (The killing) rundum gelungene Kost zu vrzeichnen. Natürlich dürfen auch technische Kapriolen nicht fehlen.
| Fazit |
Ich hatte mit dieser Scheibe ein Problem ... die gesangliche Vielfalt von John West lässt ein wenig den rauhen Metal-Touch, denn das Album kommt doch etwas zu sauber daher. Nichtsdestotrotz: Wer auf melodiösen, epischen, neoklassisch gefärbten Heavy Metal steht und ROYAL HUNT als viel zu poliert empfindet, ist bei ARTENSION bestens aufgehoben.

ARTENSION are a neoclassical/progressive metal band, consisting of members of RING OF FIRE, MAGNITUDE 9, ROYAL HUNT, Mike Terrana (drums) and Roger Staffelbach on guitar.
The band was initiated by ukrainish Vitalij Kaprij. "Sacred pathways" is their fifth record and kicks off with the fast and neoclassical track Voyage to nasca / Your victory.
This first track shows that all band members are masters of their instruments ... and masters in creating melodies and epic moments. Although the compositions are sophisticated
and difficult to play, they are able to place hooks and can be listened to fluently during most of the time. Fans of keyboard-drained straight'n'melodic progmetal will like this album very much ... it
offers complex parts, straight smashers (Sacred pathways), melody, stunning and neckbreaking technical fireworks (March to ruin), neoclassical atmosphere (Silent temple/The emperor) and rockin' drive (The killing).
There's one thing that I did not like ... the vocal variety of JOHN WEST lacks some metal drive. John has a great emotional and clean voice, but the variety of the album would have been better with some raw and aggressive use of vocals ... but nethertheless: If you love melodic epic metal with progressive metal ingredients, but ROYAL HUNT is too melodic and too polished for you, then ARTENSION might be the band of your choice, especially if you like neoclassical touch.
