Die holländischen Progrocker FLAMBOROUGH HEAD legen mit "One for the crow" das erste Album mit Eddie Mulder an der Gitarre und Margriet Boomsma an den Vocals vor.

Während das Vorgängeralbum "Defining the legacy" ein sehr dramatisches und dynamisches Album - insbesondere geprägt von Sänger Siebe Rein Schaaf - war und dem eher hardrockigen Gitarrenanschlag von Gitarrist Andre Ceints war, sind "die neuen" FLAMBOROUGH HEAD in melodischeren und ruhigeren Gefilden unterwegs. Eddie Mulder ist ein begnadeter und höchst einfühlsamer Gitarrist und trägt so auf seine Weise zum Flair des Sounds bei, Sängerin Margriet verstärkt dies durch ihre klare und warme Stimme. Schon der Opener One for the crow zeigt, daß FLAMBOROUGH HEAD trotz sanfteren Gesamtbilds überzeugen können ... ja sogar um einiges runder und kompakter wirken, nicht nur dank der orchestralen Elemente des Titelsongs. Natürlich kommen jetzt wieder die ewigen Neoprog-Nörgler hinter dem Ofen hervor und winken mit dem Zeigefinger ... "haben wir schon zig mal gehört" ... na und ? Bei Clive Nolan packt mich mittlerweile das große Gähnen, während FLAMBOROUGH HEAD 's Neoprog weitaus weniger abgegriffen und kitischig klingt, sondern aufrichtig. Jeder Song enthält - vor allem dank Keyboardeinlagen, Flöte und so mancher treibender Passagen - genügend Klasse um Neoproggern und Melodikproggern gleichermßen zuzusagen. Zudem fällt auf, daß einige verspielte Passagen und intelligen eingestreute Intermezzi mehr zu finden sind als auf den Vorgängeralben. Mit Separate, Old forest und New shoes sind sogar drei akustische Instrumentals - meist bestehend aus Flöte und Gitarre - am Start. Das Instrumental Daydreams setzt entgegen bisheriger FLAMBOROUGH HEAD-Tradition nicht auf treibende Gitarre und bestechende umher flitzende Keyboards, sondern eher auf sanfte, akustische und folkige Töne.
| Fazit |
Mir fehlt bei den "neuen" FLAMBOROUGH HEAD etwas der Biss, der Drive und die Power. Fans von kompaktem Neoprog mit Flöte und Frauenstimme werden mit "One for the crow" jedoch nicht enttäuscht und erhalten ein nettes, gut gemachtes Album.

Dutch progrockers FLAMBOROUGH HEAD present "One for the crow", their first album with Eddie Mulder on guitars and Margriet Boomsma on the vocals.
"Defining the legacy" was a very dramatic and dynamic album, especially driven by the vocals of former singer Siebe Rein Schaaf and the hardrockin guitar tunes of Andre Ceints. The "new" FLAMBOROUGH HEAD are more soft and more ambient.
EDDIE MULDER is a great and very sensitive guitarplayer, adding lots of sensitive touch to the music. Another influence on the softer sound are the clear and warm vocals of female singer Margriet.
The opener One for the crow shows, that FLAMBOROUGH had are still able to write good songs, even in softer tunes. The first half of the album is very compact and shows some very good ideas in the compositions and arrangements. Of course this album will call out all neo-prog-haters which find an easy victim here ... yes we've heard this type of music hundreds of type, but what about Clive Nolan and his stagnating compositions skills ?
During the first half of the albums FLAMBOROUGH HEAD's songs are able to convince both melodicproggers and neoproggers. Separate, Old forest and New shoes are three acoustic instrumentals, primarily consisting of flute and guitars. The second half of the album makes me miss some aggressive guitars, some dynamics and some power. In contrast to the preceiding albums the main instrumental track Daydreams is based on soft, acoustic and folky tunes instead of heavy guitars and keyboard wizardry.
Fans of compact neoprog with flute, acoustic atmosphere and female vocals won't be dissapointed by this album. For my taste the album looses too much power in the second half.
