Schön zu sehen, daß sich aus meiner Geburtsstadt Würzburg Progrock-Nachwuchs ankündigt. PERENNIAL QUEST legen mit "seconds" ihre erste Demo vor.

Die Band ist noch relativ jung, kann jedoch schon mit wohlbalancierten Kompositionen, Stilvielfalt und Qualität aufwarten. Einige Male hört man der Band Einflüsse aus dem Alternative Rock an, aber egal wann man sich daran erinnert fühlt, schwenken die Kompositionen auch schon um, und zwar entweder in ein höchst feinfühliges Gitarrensolo, funkige Sounds, sanfte Klänge oder Doppelbassdrum-getriebene Abschnitte. Bestes Beispiel hierzu ist der Opener Colours. The confessor ist komplett anders ausgefallen ... ein mystischer und dramatischer Song, wiederum mit feinfühliger Gitarrenarbeit und zurückhaltendem Drumming zu Beginn ... der Song baut sich jedoch allmählich zu einer soften, aber feinen Progmetal-Nummer auf (allerdings hätte mir hier ein etwas aggressiveres Drumming besser zugesagt), der sogar kurze Reaggae-Anleihen - gefolgt von einem mitreissenden Metal-Guitarsolo - aufweist und wohl insbesondere bei Liveauftritten für beste Unterhaltung sorgt. Mit Dreamin gibts eine gutgemachte Ballade, mit Next to the sun ist ein kleiner Ausfall am Start aber gleich darauf melden sich die Jungs mit Waiting for the light zurück, einer starken und epischen Progmetalnummer. Distant earth enthält NIGHTWISH-artige Keyboardstreicher und klassische Züge und entpuppt sich als einer der besten Progmetal-Tracks der letzten Monate aus dem deutschen Untergrund.

PERENNIAL QUEST sind eine extrem talentierte Band. Bis auf einige fehlende melodische Hooks während der Instrumentalpassagen und einigen wenigen fehlenden Melodiebögen beim Gesang ist alles in bester Ordnung, denn auch der Sound dieser Eigenproduktion geht durchaus in Ordnung. Wenn man sich vorstellt, wie Songs der Marke Waiting for the light, Seconds und Distant earth professionell aufgenommen klingen würden, dann erahnt man, daß PERENNIAL QUEST erst am Anfang sind. Höchst vielversprechend !

Fine to see that there are still progrock newcomers hailing from my city of birth Würzburg/Germany. PERENNIAL QUEST are presenting their first demo "Seconds".
The band is young but even now the guys are able to offer well balanced compositions containing a variety of
moods and styles and quality ! The band is surely influenced by Alternative Rock but every time you think about this fact the compositions change, either to throw you
into a highly sensitive guitar solo, funky sounds (SIEGES EVEN meet FUNKAHOLICS), extremely soft parts or double bass driven elements ...
for example during the wide and extremely varied opener Colours.
The confessor is completely different ... it's a great mystic and dramatic track, with sensitive guitars, soft drumming and warm
guitar chords in the beginning, later on the track evolves to a soft progmetal song, decorated with soft, intelligent and melodic intermezzos.
Seconds shows that the band has lots of cool progmetal potential ... besides the chorus (annoying drumming, double bass would have been better here) this track is extremely fine and I am sure that this track will be a killer during concerts ... even in a few years, especially because the song has a cool reaggae intermezzo which is smashed by a great melodic metal solo. Dreamin' is a well done ballad, Next to the sun can't create any atmosphere, but the
band comes back with Waiting for the light, a strong and hymnic progmetal track. Distant earth features NIGHTWISH-style string arrangements and kicks off with a beautiful soundtrack character (great classic arrangement !), the songs evolves to one of the best soft and hymnic progmetal tracks that came out of the german underground for months !
Overall PERENNIAL QUEST are a extremely talented band. The guys should try to add some melodic hooks to the instrumental parts and melodic marks to the vocal lines of a few compositions. During the silent parts the vocals are done very well ... during the heavier parts the vocals are too thin.
The sound of this production is OK, the vocals are OK, too ... but they should be enhanced and I'm sure that they will get better. If I imagine how songs like Waiting for the light, Seconds and Distant earth would sound on a professionally recorded CD PERENNIAL QUEST are just at the beginning ! A highly promising band !
